Venpongal

After a long gap...  I am with the new post.  Venpongal is the South indian breakfast recipe made  with  raw rice , moong dal and of course with some spices. During winters it is often made in our home as it contains pepper which is the best medicine for cold and cough.  The aroma of ghee in it will make divine feeling.  My father usally orders venpongal  when we dine out  at mornings.  The amount of ghee added in the pongal will be more in the hotels. So Calorie conscious me and my mom usually won't opt this in the hotels.

Here is the  recipe for u guys...

Ingredients:

Raw rice  -  1 cup

Moong dal - 1/4 cup

Ghee - 1-2 tbsp

Black pepper  -  2  - 4tsp

Jeera  -  1 tsp

Curry leaves -  1 sprig

Ginger  -  1 tbsp  finely chopped

Cashews -  5- 10 nos

Water  - 5 cups

Salt - As needed

Method:

1. Soak rice and moong dal in water for 15 - 30 mins and pressure cook it by adding 5 cups of water and salt  for 5-8 whistles.  And then mash it with a laddle.

2. Heat  a ghee in a pan . Add jeera  when it splutters add peper and then cashews, when it turns golden brown add ginger, curryleaves . Toss it for a minute.

3.  Mix  the above content with  mashed rice and moong dal.  Adjust salt. Add more  Ghee if desired.
Serve hot  with  your favourite Chutney.

Now venpongal is ready ...

I served with  coconut chutney :)

Notes:

  • My rice is old rice . So I cooked the rice in the ratio of 1: 5  . So according to your rice adjust the water.

  • If you found the rice and dal mixture is dry after pressure cooking. Then add  some hot  water and mix it up.

  • You can also add crushed pepper instead of whole ones.

  • You can also add  some Ghee while serving. Don't forget to serve hot.
