Kollu ( Horse gram) thogayal



Kollu is called as kulith in northen part of India. It is a dark brown lentil which round and flattened in shape. Horse gram is known to have many therapeutic effects but not scientifically proven though it has been recommended in ayurvedic medicine to treat renal stones, piles, etc. It is rich in iron, calcium molybdenum which have high antioxidant capacity. It also reduces the bad fat in our body.
So it is necessary to consume kollu at least twice in a month. Kollu thogayal is a very easy recipe.It is a better side dish for puli kulmbu or kara kulambu. Or you can also mix thogayal with rice and have.




Here is the recipe...




Ingredients:


Kollu/ Horsegram - 1 fistfull

Redhillies - 3-4

Cumin seeds - 1 tsp

Garlic - only one piece

Pottu kadalai/ fried gram - 1 tbsp

Coconut (grated) - 2 tbsp

Oil -  3tsp

Salt as needed

Water as needed

Method:

1. Heat 2 tsp of oil, and fry kollu until golden spots appear on it. It will pop, so be careful . After frying keep it aside.












2. Then fry Red chillies in remaining oil.











3. In a mixer jar take grated coconut , pottu kadalai, cuminseeds, garlic along with  fried kollu and red chilli.










4. Grind it by adding salt and little amount of water. Now our thogayal is ready.






You can have it with a plain rice topped with seasame oil. Or you can have it as a sidedish for puli kulambu or kara kulambu.







Notes:

  • It is important to fry kollu until golden spots appear on it. 
  • Garlic is added in order to reduce he gastric effect of kollu. As we are using raw garlic, add only one piece.
