kodo millet upma/ varagu upma/ kodra upma/ millet recipes/ healthy breakfast recipes

Hello friends and readers ... Its been long time since  i updated a recipe in my blog. Its because of my tight schedule. I was busy in packing a things for cargo and cleaning my entire home for past one month. Ya we are again relocating to India. It will take a month or two to reassemble the things here. Meanwhile we also planned a trip to our hometowns. So no cooking these days and will be pampered by my mom. (lucky girl!!!) But  without cooking, i feel like i lost something and  life is bland.  My husband also miss my food. But soon i ll spread aroma in our new home(kitchen).

Ok .. enough of my stories. Sorry for irregular in post without prior information. Hereafter i ll take time to update my virtual kitchen(haha... iam saying about my blog). Coming to today's recipe. It is a millet recipe. Kodo millet upma. Kodo millet is called 'varagu ' in tamil and ' kodra ' in hindi. As i have already mentioned in earlier posts about health benefits of millet and and importance of consuming millet in our regular diet, i  will directly go in to the recipe now. Go ahead and try this and let  your family members have a healthy  breakfast.

Here is a  healthy and tasty recipe...

Ingredients:

Kodo millet/varagu/kodra - 1 cup

Water - 2 and 1/2 cup

Onion - 1 no.

Green chillies - 4 -5 nos.

Mustard - 1 tsp

Ginger - 1 inch piece

Oil - 1-2 tbsp

Salt- as needed

Method:

1. Measure and keep the millet ready. Now keep the pressure cooker in a stove and transfer the millet in to the cooker.

2.  Dry roast it slightly. Don't let it brown/ burnt. Keep it aside.

3.  Finely chop onion and ginger , slit greenchillies . In a same pressure cooker heat a tbsp of oil , add mustard seeds and let it pops.

4. When it pops add onion and fry it till it turns transparent. Then add greenchillies and ginger. Saute them well.

5. Now add water and salt. Allow it to boil. When it boils add the roasted millet and stir well.

6. Let millet and water boils nicely. Now close the lid and pressure cook it for 3 whistles in a medium flame.

After pressure subsides, fluff it with a fork and serve hot...

Now a  healthy breakfast is ready in no time. Enjoy with coconut chutney or with curd:)

Notes:

  • You can also add chopped carrot along with onion to make it more healthy.
  • You can also skip ginger.
  • Dry roasting the millet will not give stickiness to upma. So don't skip that.

Stay tuned for more exciting recipes in Aishu kitchen :)Happy weekend:)
